Development and Parametrization of an Electrical Model Using Finite Element Method (FEM)
Task Description / Aufgabenstellung
Topic
Within the scope of the Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB), project A07 is concerned with the development of miniature lagrangian sensors for determining process parameters in fluidized bed reactors to enable process control. These sensors are intended to be swirled around inside the reactor during the process to measure parameters such as temperature, humidity, and process progress. Unlike temperature measurement, which can be achieved with conventional sensors, measuring humidity and process progress is not immediately possible.
To determine these parameters, the project relies on changes in electrical conductivity during the process. The conductivity is dependent on the increasing fluidized bed thickness and changing water content. Conductivity measurement is carried out using electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), where a defined current is passed through a substrate during voltage measurement. Subsequent comparison with previously measured conductance behavior provides insight into the current reactor state.
A particular challenge in this regard is the optimization of the electronic circuitry. One possible approach is to use a parametric electrical equivalent model of the measurement path, including the sample under investigation. The parameterization can be achieved through finite element simulation (FEM) in established software.
Task
The task is to develop a FEM model in Comsol that correctly represents a coated sensor particle’s shell including electrodes. The starting point is a solid coating state but could be extended to a fluid state. In a second step, an equivalent circuit model for Spice is to be derived and parametrized according to the Comsol simulations. The Comsol-Spice export may or may not be a suitable tool for that. In the final stage, the electrode design is to be analyzed by using the Spice model in terms of a sensitivity study and to be enhanced. The goal is to achieve a better understanding of the electrical characteristics of the system using a model based approach and enhancing the electrode design.
Objectives
Development of an electrical equivalent circuit in Spice
Construction and development of an FEM (Finite Element Method) model
(if available at that time: comparison with existing measurement data, otherwise plausibility check, or conducting own measurements)
Software: Comsol / Ansys
In Comsol there is a Spice Add-In. If this works, the focus of this task switches to the preparation of the model to optimization
If the Add-In does not work: Focus stays on the FEM modelling
Parameterization of the electrical equivalent model through FEM simulation
Obtaining an understanding of the system for the optimization of microelectronics
Possible Areas of Work
Methodical work
FEM Simulation
Spice Simulations
Electrical impedance measurements

Thema
