Using the Oscilloscope for Experiment 5

Oscilloscope functions

The WorkINGLab-Oscilloscopes support saving screenshots on USB-Flashdrives. If you want to save the screenshot, use save|recall to select the file-type and then use save|screenshot to actually save a picture.

Tau-Measurement:

  • Use the frequency response training board for the gen out of the internal function generator. GND and Vin can be used to directly pick up the output signal of the wave generator without any filters.
  • Set the Wave generator to 9V DC
  • Make sure that the channel you're measuring with is set to DC coupling

  • Set the trigger to be able to use the single mode: choose the channel you want to measure with as a source for the trigger and set the trigger type to rising edge.

  • Activate the single mode. No signal should be displayed then. After activating the single mode, connect the wave gen output to your setup as explained in the experiment. Your oscilloscope should then display the loading process of your capacitor. You probably will have to zoom in horizontally to be able to see it properly.
  • Now use the cursor Y1 or Y2 to mark the point of 63.2% of the final voltage and the cursors X1 and X2 to measure the duration until this point.
  • The time difference between the two cursors can be read at the bottom of the screen.

Phase-shift-Measurement:

  • Set the wave gen to sine-waveform, f=100Hz and an amplitude of 1.9V, no offset.
  • Make sure, that both channels you're measuring with are set to AC coupling.
  • Set the trigger appropriately. The signals are displayed stable, if the trigger is set correctly.
  • Add the phase shift measurement using the Meas-button, it can be read at the bottom of the screen.
  • Use the cursors or the amplitude measurement function to measure the amplitude of the two signals. Please make sure that you are always considering the same type of value - either an amplitude or a peak-to-peak value. The names used in the oscilloscope control can be confusing!

Resonance-Measurement:

  • Connect your setup as explained in the experiment. Then start the wave gen with a sine-waveform, an amplitude of 1.9V and a frequency of 100Hz.
  • Now watch how the signal is changing, once you slowly increase the wave gen frequency

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes include:

  • the coupling is set to measure DC, but AC should be measured
  • the coupling is set to measure AC, but DC should be measured
  • the wave gen output is not activated - push the wave gen button
  • the trigger is not set (correctly) - both the type and value could be wrong
  • the signal is out of scale
