Analyzing and Enhancing the Reproducibility and Optimization of Vibrotactile Actuator Measurements

Task Description / Aufgabenstellung

The Institute for Mechatronics in Mechanics is addressing the challenge that vibrotactile actuators, despite their widespread use for haptic feedback in consumer devices, still lack a standardized and physically validated method of characterization. A recent characterisation study (Lüer et al., 2025) measured 26 such actuators under both idle (unloaded) abd blocked (loaded) conditions.

The aim of this project is to investigate and optimize the reproducibility and repeatability of actuator measurements in idle and blocked conditions. It will involve comparing the newly developed baseplates with the existing solution, as well as conducting multiple measurements on actuators to analyse and improve the repeatability and reproducibility of the results. The focus will be on factors such as accuracy, precision, and both repeatability and reproducibility.

Tasks:

  • Conduct a literature review on accuracy, precision and repeatability/reproducibility

  • Comparisons:

    • Comparison of new baseplates with existing solutions

    • Comparison of multiple measurements of the same actuator

    • Comparison of 1st test stand vs. second test stand

    • Comparison of several actuators of the same actuator model

  • Analysis of the collected data to determine the level of accuracy, precision, repeatability and reproducibility achieved:

    • Identification of trends and patterns

    • Identification of areas where improvements can be made

    • Statistical analysis of the results to quantify any observed differences

  • Optimization:

    • Based on the findings: propose optimization solutions to improve the measurement performances

    • Evaluate the proposed changes
