Comparative Analysis of FM Broadcasting and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for Low-Latency Haptic Feedback in Large-Scale Performances

Task Description / Aufgabenstellung

When performing as a dancer or musician in front of a large audience, additional sensory channels are highly welcomed to enhance engagement.

This project focuses on the development of an additional communication system for a handheld haptic feedback device (100x100x100 mm³) capapble of providing 6-DOF feedback. Recent research indicates that Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is a critical technology for real-time musical haptics, offering distinct advantages in latency, reliability and synchronization. The goal of this project is to implement a UWB-based communication system and perform a methodological comparison between the existing FM-based and the new developed UWB-based solution to determine the optimal system for large-scale audience engagement.

Tasks:

  • Research and State of the Art: Conduct a comprehenseve review of FM broadcasting (incl. metadata embedding (see Masterthesis Yu-Tung Tsai ( )) and UWB technology. Analyze the trade-offs between these technologies regarding latency, reliability and scalability for large audience numbers

  • System development: Design and implement a UWB-based prototype for the same 6 DOF haptic feedback device.

  • Methodological Comparison: Define key performance indicators (KPI) for the comparison including end-to-end latency, reliability and packet loss under varying interference conditions, power consumption and battery life considerations, scalability (broadcast capacity vs. netwok density)

  • Testing and Validation: Develop a test sequence to measure the defined KPIs. Conduct comparative tests to evaluate performance in simulated performance scenarios, also in noisy environments.

  • Analysis: Refine prototypes based on testing results and document the findings. Critically compare the results and provide a final recommendation of the suitability of each technology for specific performance contexts.
