BA/MA/PA: Energiebilanz TUHH KI-Server
Measurement and Analysis of the Electrical and Thermal Energy Balance of an AI Server Cluster
Hintergrund
Background
A high-performance AI server is currently being set up at TUHH, which — together with the existing server infrastructure — exhibits a substantial and strongly time-varying energy demand. In addition to the electrical power consumption, waste heat is continuously generated, which is removed via a water cooling system and can prospectively be utilized as a heat source.
For the design of a future self-sufficient or partially self-sufficient energy supply strategy for the site — a corresponding design methodology is already available at the institute — time-resolved electrical and thermal demand profiles (as well as potential heat feed-ins) are required. The purpose of this thesis is to establish this data basis.
Tasks
Measurement concept: Planning of the quantities to be recorded (expected to include electrical power, volume flow rates, and supply/return temperatures of the water cooling system) as well as selection and dimensioning of the required measurement equipment
Commissioning: Setup or supervision of the installation of the measurement equipment and configuration of the data acquisition
Energy balancing: Recording and evaluation of the electrical and thermal energy balance of the AI server and/or the server infrastructure as a whole
Analysis (depending on the scope of the thesis): Derivation of typical usage profiles from the measurement data
Forecasting (depending on the scope of the thesis): Estimation or prediction of future electrical and thermal demands as a basis for the energy supply planning
The scope of the thesis will be adapted individually to the level (Bachelor's/Master's): a Bachelor's thesis focuses on the measurement concept, setup, and energy balancing; a Master's thesis additionally covers in-depth data analysis, the derivation of load profiles, and demand forecasting.
